Dreaming - Loving
“He who loves the dream of a Christian community more than the community itself, often does great damage to that community, no matter how well-intentioned he might be.”
-Dietrich Bonhoeffer, quoted in David Bosch, Transforming Mission, 387.

Bonhoeffer was taken with the concreteness of the world and faith in Christ. To escape into the ideal is to escape from the world, and thus the very place Christ is revealed. Christ is revealed, for Bonhoeffer, only in the concrete-and-regularly gathering congregation where Word, Sacrament, and Confession occur. The church is a concrete gathering, where Christ reveals Christself, and thus the new creation exists within the world.
Chris, you give such a clear explanation as to Bonhoeffer’s commitment to community… real community. Thank you brother.
